The Local Legacy Project is a series of signs that use the visual language of vehicular traffic signage to present and direct viewers attention to current social themes in the dynamic urban environment of San Francisco.
The language of traffic signage is pervasive, if not transparent, in the urban environment and aims to communicate universally. The Local Legacy Project adopts this directive, and informative language as a vehicle to express how various socially minded themes mobilize or immobilize human lives. The Legacy Project aims to present a snapshot in time of the local flavor and character of specific locales in hopes of raising community/neighborhood awareness and pride while educating the public at large that are transient to these particular areas.
The signs will interact with citizens at large on a localized level (with neighborhood-specific content) to direct their attention to notions of local character (e.g. personalized signs introducing passers-by to the neighborhood residents: 'Manuel, Butcher, 27 Yrs.' introduces you to a local character but also presents his personal history/connection with the neighborhood), facts (e.g. neighborhood statistical demographics or societal and cultural elements) and change (e.g. urban construction as a dichotomy of improvement and displacement), and potentially other various themes prevalent in the fabric of urban life.
The Local Legacy signs will be produced and installed identically to existing traffic signage, further integrating their presence within the environment at large. The initial launch of this project is intended for San Francisco, with potential for expansion to other locales.
